Maritime  

This course is both practical and hands-on so be prepared to get wet! Based out of NMIT Marlborough it will run over three, one week blocks and will include boat trips out of Picton and also a visit to the Marlborough Port/Marina. You will gain some understanding of what common parts and equipment on boats are used for and get hands on with VHF radio and emergency distress beacons. Find out how to operate a boat safely, what can go wrong and what to do if there is a maritime emergency. You will also have the opportunity to practice sea survival skills which may assist your survival in the event things go wrong at sea.  So, if you have an interest in boating or marine operations come and join us and be part of this exciting new course for Trades Academy in Marlborough.

Students need to be physically able to get on and off a boat safely.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

• Explain the purpose of common vessel parts, fittings, and onboard equipment in routine boating operations.
• Demonstrate the ability to apply boating safety and survival procedures to prevent and respond to maritime
  emergencies.
• Operate VHF radio equipment and emergency distress beacons during boating operations.
• Interpret distress, emergency, and safety communication procedures, including the use of EPIRB’s, in accordance with maritime safety requirements.
• Explain marine VHF radio and EPIRB concepts, equipment features, service providers, and calling procedures as applied within New Zealand boating operations.
