Future Farming  

In partnership with the Trades Academy, Papa Taiao Earthcare delivers the Future Farming Programme in Mohua/Golden Bay and Te Wairau/Marlborough, combining innovative farming approaches with essential, practical skills to support resilient and sustainable farming into the future.

This course is made for Year 11 to 12 ākonga (students) who thrive in a practical learning environment. Every week will be visits to farmers, contractors and food lovers in the community.

Ākonga can do this course for 1 and 2 years. If they complete the 2-year course they can gain the NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills Level 2.

We weren’t originally looking for a Trades Academy course, but Pip at school told us about Future Farming and how it was being offered in Golden Bay, so we decided to give it a go.

Find out more about what you will learn in the programme

On completion of this course you will be able to:

After one year of the course, you will complete one of the intakes. If you continue the course into the following year, you will complete the other intake: 

Intake One 

  • Open and close beehives under close supervision.
  • Plant trees or shrubs.
  • Open and draw out a coil of wire, tie knots, join wire,
    and prepare wire for transport and storage.
  • Prepare and use traps to control rural pest animals.

Intake Two 

  • Demonstrate and apply safe work practices while
    carrying out duties in a Primary Industry operation.
  • Repair fences by replacing a broken post and repairing a broken wire.
  • Install wooden battens in fencing.
  • Install, dismantle and store temporary electric fences.

Alongside these standards you will learn soil science, water management, chainsaw maintenance, pest plant management, forestry, and high value food production. 


Note: Some unit standards may change. Final information on the standards specific to your course will be available prior to starting your programme.
