If you are interested in aviation and engineering, and relish in a technical challenge, then join us at the NMIT Nelson Campus .
In this hands-on course, you’ll get to learn all about the civil aviation industry, exploring it’s history, aviation careers and training options. As part of the course you will gain foundation skills and knowlege on aircraft structures, aircraft systems, aircraft maintenence practices and learn about the principles of aircraft flight. Get amongst real aircraft and cutting-edge technology and gain invaluable insights into the exciting realm of Aviation Engineering—a profession in high demand and ripe with opportunity.
You will take field trips to local Aviation points of interest throughout the year and connect with NMIT’s industry partners such as AirNZ, Rocket Lab and AirForce recruiters.

On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the function of each major system and its components on an aircraft.
- Discuss standard aircraft maintenance practices.
- Discuss the history of Aviation and the development of aircraft.
- Explain the basic principles of flight of a fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.
- Solve basic arithmetic and mathematical problems to calculate aircraft structure requirements.
- Assemble simple aircraft structural components to make a minor aircraft structure.
- Provide details of standard aircraft maintenance practices.
- Identify aviation support structures, aircraft types and operations in New Zealand.
- Demonstrate knowledge of aviation career and training options.
