I am in Year 13 and decided to enrol on the Art and Design Trades Academy course as I wanted to expand my learning. At the start of the year, I was a bit nervous about the thought of leaving school so by doing this course it has given me the confidence to be more independent, and I have had heaps of fun as well.
Coming on the first day was a bit intimidating as I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t know my way around the NMIT campus. But I realised everyone was in the same situation and it has been nice meeting new people.
I have loved photography as we have been able to explore beyond the NMIT grounds. I have also enjoyed learning skills from different parts of the Arts. The tutors are so lovely, with lots of knowledge and they are very helpful. They have given me a good insight into the industry and the range of options available to work and study in.
Trades Academy is a good way for students to gain some independence and to explore the world outside of school. It is a good way to find new interests; Printmaking was that for me as I wasn’t sure about it but ended up really liking it. The tutors are supportive, flexible and treat you more like an adult which is a nice experience and helpful with what it might be like when you leave school.
I am keen to continue being creative and might study something like Early Childhood Education remotely when I leave school. The skills and independence I have gained on this course will help me with whatever I decide to do beyond school.
