Course: Sport and Exercise
Graduated: 2025
School: Waimea College

I enrolled in the Sport and Exercise Trades Academy because I’m really interested in sport and wanted to learn more about study and work options in the industry.

The course has been even better than I expected, we’ve done lots of practical activities and have gone out from NMIT to do paddle boarding, boxing, and even walked to the Centre of NZ. There is some writing, but it ties in well with the practical work we’re doing.

I’ve learned about how the body works in sport and exercise, and also about good nutrition. The course doesn’t feel like I’m missing a day of school because I’m still learning heaps, and it’s all about something I’m passionate about. Waimea College timetable works well with those that select Trades Academy as I only miss one of my other classes on a Friday so that has helped not missing too much of my other subjects. I moved to New Zealand a year ago from Malaysia, so English isn’t my first language. I found learning the names of the bones and muscles challenging, but Jay, the tutor, was really helpful and supportive. It’s also been great meeting students from other schools; they’ve been really kind and have helped me a lot too.

Trades Academy has helped me think more about my future plans, and it’s awesome that you can do it while still at school. In the future, I might look into doing a qualification related to sport and exercise. I’m in Year 12 and will be returning to school to explore more options for after school and to keep improving my English.
