Mannie Tai
For Mannie, the Manaaki Tāpoi programme has allowed him to learn more about his Maori culture. He was a bit anxious at first but has found the course so much fun and is grateful for the opportunity to find out more about his Maori heritage.
“I enjoy connecting with the other students and the tutors on the course. I particularly enjoy the bonding activities where we get to know the other students. Some of the activities have been challenging, especially if I tried to rush them. It worked so much better for me when I slowed down and took my time.
I like going to Whenua Iti and to the Marae as they are quiet places with plenty of space and you don’t get distracted. Our tutors are really helpful and together they share their knowledge and customs with us.”
Keeping up with his school work hasn’t been difficult for Mannie. “I find when I get back from Manaaki I have a momentum to get going with my school work and I catch up easily.”
