Hairdressing is in my family; my grandma did Hair and Beauty when she left school. I enjoy doing my own hair and makeup so enrolled on this course as I wanted to learn more, see if I am good at it, and to see if this industry were something I would like to train and work in when I leave school.
The best part about this course is interacting with people and clients. You get to experience what it is like to work in a salon but also to be a client and have others do your hair and makeup. The tutors have been very supportive and organised. They have high standards and treat it like a workplace. This has made us all step up as a team and work together. We are treated like adults, and it is very independent, but the tutors are always there to help you learn new skills and the theory.
This course has pushed me out of my comfort zone, but this has helped build my confidence. Being away from school 1 day a week has been a bit of a challenge. But you just need to make a commitment to catch up on any work missed. I would recommend anyone at school to do this course, especially if you are not sure what you want to do beyond school. It is such a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and to learn what is expected in a future working environment.
I intend to return to school to complete Year 13, then I am hoping to apply to NMIT either to study Hairdressing, Beauty, or Nursing. For me I have realised I want to work in an industry that is practical, working with others, and where I can care for others.
