Jake Peterson

Course: Mechanical Engineering
Graduated: 2025
School: Waimea College

I chose to do Mechanical Engineering through Trades Academy as I had done it as school and enjoyed how practical it was. I felt the Trades Academy course had more to offer than school. The best part of Trades Academy has been being away from school learning in a different environment and meeting new people from other schools.

At times being away from school for a day has meant it has been hard to catch up on work missed from school. But I have enjoyed the learning at Trades Academy and would recommend anyone interested in metal work at school or anyone who wants to do Engineering beyond school to do the Mechanical Engineering Trades Academy.

The tutors are nice and know what they are doing. They have been good at telling us about the Engineering industry and the options available to work and learn. They always demonstrate what we are learning and let us practice while also explaining the theory. This year I am hoping to finish Year 12 and leave school. Ideally, I am looking for work and eventually I would like to work in the Heavy Diesel industry.
