Iri Irihapeti

Course: Electrical
Graduated: 2025
School: Rai Valley Area School

I have always wanted to be a sparky but wanted to know more before trying to gain an apprenticeship. I was living in Timaru, and I was going to do it down there, but when we moved to Rai Valley, I saw Electrical was a Trades Academy option so applied to do the course. I am a practical learner and need repetition to learn, this course has been great at providing this as it is so practical.

I come from a family of all girls, and I found the course had a lot of boys on it, that was a challenge to get used to. But I have enjoyed the course, and it would be cool to see more females giving Electrical Trades Academy a go. The tutors are good and are very patient. They help us when we are unsure and sometimes must go over things many times for us to learn. I have really appreciated this as it has helped me retain what we are being taught.

This course has made me realise I do want to be a sparky. I would recommend the course to anyone thinking they might want to be a sparky when they leave school. The course has meant I have learnt a lot more about Electrical stuff and I feel more comfortable with the terms and skills. I am looking to move back to Timaru and hoping to gain an Electrical apprenticeship, but if not, I will enrol on the Level 3 Electrical pre-trade course.
