I applied to the Hairdressing Trades Academy as I wanted to gain some experience in this industry before leaving school. I thought this would be useful as I am keen to gain a Hairdressing apprenticeship.
The best part about Trades Academy has been connecting with people and making friends. This was a new experience for me as I have spent my whole life doing Te Kura Correspondence School. In the course you get to gain hands on experience in things like hair styling and washing. It has been cool that everyone in the class is interested in the same thing, so it has made connecting with each other easy as we share similar interests.
Initially having to work with people I didn’t know was challenging, but we quickly got to know each other. When I came in I thought it would be about hair cutting, but now that I know more, I realise there is so much more to learn.
The tutor is nice, welcoming, and very helpful. She explains what we need to do well and makes sure we are supported to do things correctly. I would recommend others to do the Hairdressing Trades Academy. It starts with the basics that you need to work in the industry. It is a great learning experience and not stressful at all. I feel more confident about my knowledge as it has set me up better to work in the industry and hopefully gain an apprenticeship one day.
This year I will gain NCEA Level 2 and hoping to gain work in the Hairdressing industry, ideally gaining an apprenticeship in the future.
