I have always had an interest in cars and like watching shows about rebuilding cars. My Career Advisor told me about this Trades Academy course and suggested I sign up as it was a good opportunity to learn more about the Automotive industry.
The best part has been rebuilding the engines, even though at times it was a bit stressful due to the challenge of it. But in the end, it was cool to complete it and that is why I found it the most enjoyable part. I also feel it has given me a good understanding of how engines work. The tutors are easy to talk to; they are very patient with us! It is a big class, but they make sure you get the help you need to learn the skills and complete tasks.
I am from Collingwood Area School, so we leave at 6:30am and the drive has been challenging, especially getting over the Takaka Hill. But if students are interested in the Trades they should sign up to Trades Academy as the knowledge and skills you gain is worth it. Through this course and my Gateway work placement I feel it has provided me a good foot in the door to the Automotive industry. I originally was going to do the Level 3 pre-trade in Automotive at NMIT, but through my experiences this year it has meant I have gained an apprenticeship with a business in Golden Bay.
